Success Story: Time Well Spent

Time. The only commodity that really matters – we are each allotted an amount with no way of increasing it; however, time well spent should not be confused with time lost or time wasted. It is imperative that when we use our time that it is spent achieving something worthwhile. No one is responsible for the use of our time other than us and our goals should reflect that. Specifically, in relation to your career goals – working 40 hours a week, every week, for forty years equates to 83,200 hours or 9.5 years – how do you plan on spending that time? Archna Gautam was pondering the very same thoughts when she approached Apollo.

Prior to working with Apollo, what were you looking for in a career?

Prior to working with Apollo, I was looking for opportunities to grow into more significant positions with greater responsibility and ultimately to increase value to the organization. Also, the chance to work with interesting, highly motivated and responsible people. It’s worth trading your time in life to achieve something worthwhile.

How did you find out about Apollo?

I was referred to Apollo by my close friend and colleague. I am so glad that I listened to my friend to trust the experienced team at Apollo.

How did your experience with Apollo compare to what you expected or experienced with other staffing firms?

My overall experience with Apollo is outstanding and very fulfilling. They are professional and supportive mentors that would strategically guide in best direction. I would be very happy and honored to refer to my friends.

What excites you most about your current job?

I am really happy at my current position in my new company. After a long time I am able to find a place where greatest minds meet the most humble people.

Is there anyone specifically at Apollo that you would like to thank?

I would really like to say thank you Julien and Linda at Apollo for making a smooth journey of finding the perfect job that fits my skill sets and personality.

What else would you like us to know?

I would also like to mention the plenty of time that Julien at Apollo took to listen to me and consistently updated me on a job interview progress. He reaches out to me if any issues arise, and follows up promptly when I have questions. Again, I want to thank Apollo for all the help, guidance and support.

Archna Gautam took control over her career to ensure that it would be time well spent and we are so grateful to be a part of that journey with her. Success Story: From Humble Beginnings

Bree Taylor-Walling is the type of success story employees at Apollo love to read. Over the past 5 years, Bree has been earning her stripes in the production environment – from humble beginnings – working her way up at a company from a Production Associate, Production Lead, to Production Control Coordinator; however, the ladder for progress at her company ended there. On her search for the next step in her career path she came in contact with Apollo Professional Solutions and was able to secure a new position that was not only more financially stable, but has given her the opportunity to gain experience with a revered company in the aerospace industry. Below is her story:

Prior to working with Apollo, what were you looking for in a career?

Prior to working for Apollo I was looking for a career that I could really enjoy doing, but didn’t demand so much of my time. I am very dedicated to what I do and I take pride in knowing that performing my job to the best of my abilities has a big impact on the reliability of the products I build at the end result; especially knowing that the end result means keeping planes in the air or protecting out military. My last job was very demanding of my time and energy and took a toll on my self as well as my family. I was looking for a good balance, a job where i can be dedicated and make a difference but still be able to be with my family at the end of the day.

How did you find about Apollo?

I found a job listing on career builder and I applied for it. Apollo contacted me about it since the job was through them.

How did your experience with Apollo compare to what you expected or experienced with other staffing firms?

Apollo has been great to work with. Everyone I have spoken with at Apollo has been really nice and able to answer any and all questions I have had. Since this is my first time working with a staffing firm I found Apollo very informative and easy to work with.

What excites you most about your current job?

I love my current job through Apollo. The environment at my current job is awesome and really helping me to expand my knowledge about the Aerospace Industry. I feel like this job was the next step in my career and I love all the new experiences.

What is one thing you have learned there (tangible/intangible) that you plan to carry on into the future?

Everyday I learn something new at my current job. Even through its only been two weeks since I started I find that Im learning more about the products I used to build at my old job while applying the knowledge I have to fulfill my role in my new position. So the knowledge I am gaining at my current position will carry on into my future career endeavors.

In there anyone specifically at Apollo that you would like to thank?

Nick Curtin has been my contact through this process and I would like to thank him for being so helpful and supportive in this experience.

What else would you like us to know?

I was totally shocked when I found out I had gotten the job I applied for and that the company was really excited about bringing me on. It really boosted my confidence in myself and helped me to start a new path in my career.

Words cannot properly convey our happiness for Bree and her new career. We are so proud to have her apart of the Apollo family. If you are reading this and would like to have Apollo add a chapter to your success story please reach out to our offices and check out our openings.

Success Story: Veterans Success Story

Apollo Professional Solutions has been ramping up our efforts in order to bring  Apollo success stories on a weekly basis.  Given the national holiday, Veterans Day, occurring this week – we wanted to highlight a veteran who Apollo has helped add another chapter to his success story. Below is the story of Brian Johnson.

1. As a veteran, prior to working with Apollo, what were you looking for in a career in the private sector?

My intent was to find a position that allowed me to demonstrate my skills and experience, while simultaneously challenging me to acquire new ones. I’ve served in the Army, Navy and Air Force. I’ve worked in the IT field in both the military and the private sector. The Government / Defense sector is the perfect place for folks like me to apply their knowledge. My current position demands the professionalism that veterans bring to the workplace, and challenges me to keep up with the newest advances in technology. What’s just as valuable is the satisfaction I get from being part of a team that serves our nation.

2. How did you find out about Apollo?

Actually I didn’t find Apollo- Apollo found me. I had submitted my resume to an Internet site, and that’s where they found it. These days very few people spend their whole career with one employer. Even the best employees can suddenly find themselves unemployed. For that reason I always have a copy of my resume on the Internet. It was a great day when Apollo found me, and an even better day when they made me part of the team.

3. How did your experience with Apollo compare to what you expected or experienced with other staffing firms?

I’ve been working as a contractor or consultant since 1992. I consider myself extraordinarily fortunate, because nearly every manager and co-worker I have had over the years has been enjoyable to work with. There is one area in which I give most employers and staffing firms a poor grade however: “Administration.” I’ve noticed that on those occasions when “someone” is making my work difficult, it’s usually someone I’ve never met, or spoken to, or even seen! That’s not the case with Apollo. I’ve never had to ask them to “fix” something they didn’t get right administratively, or provide something I didn’t have. That’s because they seem to get everything right the first time, and anticipate my needs. Having that seamless and transparent support behind me allows me to focus on my primary mission, and deliver uninterrupted productivity to the customer.

4. What excites you most about your current job?

The most exciting aspect of my job is the opportunity to apply skills I learned in graduate school for the first time. While I was studying for my Master’s Degree in Information Technology, I was required to learn JAVA development. I had never been interested in writing code before, but when I learned how to write simple scripts that accomplished valuable tasks for the customer, it was fantastic. When a program that takes you one day to write does a weeks worth of work- that’s rewarding!

5. What is one thing you have learned there that you plan to carry on into the future?

I learned how to write a Master’s Thesis; and the subject of that thesis was Apollo’s customer. I had an extraordinary degree of support and cooperation across three levels of management. I couldn’t have done it without them. My newfound knowledge, skills, and abilities are the most “valuable” asset I take into the future; but the pride I take in past achievements is the most rewarding.

6. What else would you like us to know?

I’m currently at Raytheon. They were number one on the list of employers I wanted to work for. I sent them resumes for ten years, and they never once responded. Apollo found me, and helped me get my foot in the door. My new managers can’t believe I was so well qualified for this position, and yet I spent years “lost in the shuffle.” Contracting has allowed me to travel the world, gain experience in an extraordinary array of skills, and wake up every morning knowing I was going to do something new and different. For me- it’s a great way of life.

Not only was Apollo able to help place Brian Johnson into a field of his expertise, but we were able put him into a company that he has held in high regard for quite sometime. Placing the right people in right jobs is what Apollo does best. We are always excited to witness another flourishing success story within Apollo. If you are looking to add to your success story, check out our current openings or contact one of our offices.

Whether people are active duty, veterans, or civilians we are happy to work with them and see what openings we have that fit their body of work. For more job advice and job openings check out our Twitter and Facebook.

Success Story: Loyalty Pays Off

Loyalty in the contracting world is not as prevalent as it should be. There are many companies that solely focus on the bottom line, just like there are many contractors job-hopping to next highest paying job. Both sides cannot really be blamed because the system we currently operate in encourages them to do so. At Apollo we recognize that we have the ability to impact a person’s career path from a couple months to a couple years, and we maintain a service edge when it comes to interacting with our clients and contractors. Loyalty is exemplified by our success story today;  on this rare occasion we celebrate the success story of a man who has been with us these past seven years. Robert Asher has certainly committed a large bulk of his success story to Apollo and for that we are grateful.

1. Prior to working with Apollo, what were you looking for in a career?

I was looking for a long term contract and a pleasant work environment.  This assignment has lasted over 7 years and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with.

2. How did you find about Apollo?

I learned about Apollo from Bruce Thomason, Regional Vice President for Apollo.  I had worked for Bruce on a previous assignment and knew from that good experience I could trust him and Apollo.

3. How did your experience with Apollo compare to what you expected or experienced with other staffing firms?

I have worked for over six different staffing firms and Apollo has been the best of the group.  Bruce Thomason hand delivers my pay stub in person every week which allows us to chat face to face which I appreciate. If I ever have any questions Bruce generally has the answer or if not he quickly gets back to me with an answer.  I have never had a mistake on my paycheck or had a direct deposit that was late.

 4. What excites you most about your current job?

One of the interesting things about my job is working on new programs such as the X47-B.  This unmanned aircraft that can take off and land from an aircraft carrier without human intervention.  Working on new programs like the X47-B is always more interesting that working on old existing programs.

5. In there anyone specifically at Apollo that you would like to thank?

Bruce Thomason.  He got me this job and has done everything possible to keep me happy here.

6. What else would you like us to know?

I first went contracting over 30 years ago and have never looked back.  I have seen parts of the U.S. and the world that I never would have seen if I had continued to work as a direct these past 30 years.  I have worked with many interesting people on interesting programs which keeps the job interesting.

Robert Asher’s journey is special tale and one we are proud to share with the world today. Truly, he has contributed to Apollo’s success story as much as we have contributed to his story. There are so few words in the English language that could fully encapsulate our gratitude towards Robert Asher, so we will leave him with a simple message;

“Thank you, Robert for all of the hard work and loyalty that you have shown us these past seven years. As we say in Apollo, may your journey continue onward and upward. All the best.”

Success Story: Never Give Up

Never give up. That was the motto of Eric Cox as he attacked the job market in search for his future employment. When Eric reached out to Apollo, his enthusiasm was apparent in our initial interaction. We realized that Eric was the type that would work to a task and not to a clock, so we sought out the openings with our clients and got him to work as soon as possible. The following is his success story.

1.Prior to working with Apollo, what were you looking for in a career?

Before discovering Apollo, I found myself exhaustively looking for work in Computer Aided Drafting and Design only to be passed over several times and it just got to the point where nobody was willing to give me a chance. Not even working at Auto Zone was in the cards.

2.How did you find about Apollo?

I discovered Apollo at a posting on a bulletin board outside the office of my Director of Career Services at ITT Technical Institute in Desoto, Texas, virtually by accident. Pitney Bowes was in need and the holidays were about a month away. Right away I submitted a resume to Bill Carriveau and the next thing I know, I’m going through the preliminary process before starting the job.

3.How did your experience with Apollo compare to what you expected or experienced with other staffing firms?

I just did not know what I was getting into at first, but Apollo put me to work in less than a week, although because of security reasons at Pitney Bowes I wound up waiting one week. Four months later, I went from a temp to a direct hire after, yes, many hardships and several obstacles, but not giving up.

4. What excites you most about your current job?

The only exciting thing was the knowledge I picked up along the way and being able to use that knowledge from the time I had been hired with Pitney Bowes. I learned how important it was to continue production and learned to have an understanding about certain procedures, as well as how important organization was.

5.Is there anyone specifically at Apollo that you would like to thank?

I only have one person to thank, Mr. Carriveau. He gave me the opportunity when nobody else would. From time to time I put him through some degree of hell, but he kept me on track and eventually I earned a permanent position with Pitney Bowes!

Eric is one of the many people we have contributed a chapter to within their success story. We are excited as ever for him and all of our contractors. If you would like to see what Apollo can add to your success story, please contact us. Also, be sure to check out our Facebook and Twitter!

Proper Job Searching: Be Proactive

Are you putting yourself in the best position to acquire your dream job?

By Nick Curtin

The development of these massive job boards may have made the process of finding a job easier, but it also can lead to an apathetic and lazy approach to securing employment. I have spoken with a multitude of people that post their resume online and wait for a company to reach out to them or only look on that job board. This is a mistake. Below I will go into how to be pro-active and inventive in searching for your next step in your success story:

Reach Out to a Staffing Firm: Shameless promotion, I know, but seriously think abut it. Staffing firms, like Apollo, are immersed in the job market. Read more about the benefits here.

Company Website – Career Section: There may be hundreds of thousands of jobs within a job board, but there are plenty more outside of them. As companies become more integrated on the web, fully leveraging their website and looking to cut cost, they will be less inclined to pay to have their positions posted elsewhere.

LinkedIn & Networking: Leverage your current network – go to friends and business contacts in the industry of interest and inquire about companies in this field, who may be hiring, or even who they can show your resume to. Piggybacking off networking, you should have a completed LinkedIn profile preferably with recommendations. Utilize the introduction tool LinkedIn offers to meet influencers in your field of choice – make them aware of your aspirations and ask for advice. The worst that happens is you do not get a response, the best that happens they like your background enough to follow up with an interview, and most likely you will just end up with some parting advice and well wishes.

Brand Your Image: Every social media platform that someone occupies helps paint a picture of who they really are as a person. It is your responsibility that all the platform are sending out a consistent message – the contents of which are up to you, but just make sure that the viewer will have no misconceptions to you, to your brand. To enhance your brand, I would recommend creating a personal webpage/landing page. There are several sites that offer this and the tools to develop it are very intuitive. It is on these personal pages that you are able to direct your audience to the platforms you are active on and provide your audience with a foundation of your branded image.

Research: Visit Business Journal, Glass Door, Forbes, etc. Research the best companies to work for, fastest growing companies, most innovative companies, companies with the best cafeteria, whatever you fancy. Just begin to populate a list of companies that have substance and are recognized for the areas you value most. Competition for the positions within these companies may be tougher, but at least you will begin to build on the type of you company you want to work for and look for emulating companies.

These are just a few more ways to be pro-active in your job search. Thank you for stopping by, and if you have not had a chance to speak with a recruiter, give us a shout. We would love for a chance to talk about contributing to your future success story. Until next week!

Success Stories – First Time Using a Staffing Firm

For the month of May, Apollo would like to extend our warmest welcome to our latest success story, Samuel Capouch. Sam was a recent graduate looking for work after school, below is his story.

1. How did you experience with Apollo compare to what you expected or experienced with other staffing firms? If you had no experience with other staffing firms, perhaps preconceived notions going into it?

I sent my resume to several staffing firms in regards to the junior scientist position. Apollo Professional Solutions was extremely prompt with their reply, and quickly did everything that they could to get me placed into the position and offered whatever assistance they possibly could throughout the entire process. I have not had experience with a staffing firm in the past, but I have had friends who have utilized staffing firms in the past in order to obtain employment. I was pleasantly surprised with the effort and continual support that Apollo provided me with throughout the entire hiring process, as well as the resources that were provided to me in order to assist with preparation for interviews and what to expect when I began my job.

2. How did you hear about Apollo?  If you had not heard of Apollo prior to us establishing contact with you, what were you looking for in a career and how did Apollo assist that pursuit?

I discovered Apollo when exploring career websites in my pursuit for an entry level position. Apollo, when compared to the other staffing firms that I had researched and made contact with through the web, provided the greatest amount of clarity and most in depth explanation in regards to the position that I was applying for. This put me at a distinct advantage when going through the application process, as I knew what to expect throughout the whole process and how to better prepare myself for each step along the way.

3. Is there anyone specifically at Apollo that you would like to thank?

I would like to thank Nicholas Curtin specifically for continually providing me with support throughout the application process, for always being forthcoming with what to expect during the interview process, for providing me with resources in order to better prepare myself, and for keeping in contact with me throughout the entire process.

4. What else would you like us to know?

Overall, I had a great experience with Apollo and their help to place me in my current career. I could not have obtained this job without the diligent help of Nick Curtin and Gloria Beach, as well as the other staff members at Apollo Professional Solutions. Finding entry level positions right out of college is always a challenging task and the fact that I gained employment immediately after graduation speaks volumes about the abilities of Nicholas Curtin and the other employees of Apollo. Professional Solutions.
